An NFL Game, A REALTOR, A Home Buyer and A Home Seller, What?
How do NFL players talk smack, draw blood during a contest and at the final whistle, shake hands, joke and smile together. Regardless of the winner or loser, after the final whistle sounds, competing players merge on the field doing what friends do. Many get together on the fifty yard line where they kneel together and pray.
Why would I compare the NFL to real estate? I have just had a settlement where I represented a first time home buyer and a REALTOR friend and old business partner of mine with a competing company represented the home seller. With real estate the ball changes hands without physical contact, but there is movement from one end to the other and emotional ups and downs.
With two decades of settlements under my belt, I realized while leaving that this was as worthy as the process gets. The word perfect describle the honorable way the home buyer and home seller dealt with the bumbs in the road, like the home inspection and under appraisal.
From the moment the offer was submitted, as an insider or outsider, you would not have known that the real estate agents knew each other, much less were friends. No banter back and forth, all about business her looking out for the home owners best interest and me working on the best deal for the first time home buyer.
There were normal negotiations like the initial offer price and terms going back and forth a few times and the home inspection repairs, similar counter offering. Then there was the not so normal under appraisal and the difficulties associated with working through it. It all worked out, not because of the REALTORS, but the home buyer and home seller were fair and reasonable, each making acceptable compromises.
There is one major difference with the NFL and a real estate transaction. In the NFL one team must win and one must lose, in a real estate transaction all parties must win. Napolean Hill is a famous author, his best know work is “Think and Grow Rich” below in one of the pillars of success expressed in that book;
“I fully realize that no wealth or position can long endure unless built upon truth and justice. Therefore I will engage in no transaction that does not benefit all whom it affects.”
There is a lot of fraud on the planet today. It is imperative to recognize that when we when two legitimate parties are brought together with a shared goal, finalizing a home sale, all should work, within reason to make it take place. I am not saying to give up the farm, but if you really want to relocate, it is within your capacity to make it happen.
I have been involved in good and bad real estate deals, in the majority of cases the bad could have very easily been good.
The home sale process shoud be a great experience. At the conclusion of every real estate transaction there should be handshakes, laughter and hugs, if not, everyone loses. If NFL players can do what they do for an hour and still get along, can’t we?.
